My first election day

Today is a pretty big day for me: I'm voting for the first time ever. My siblings and I used to go with my mom to vote, and I've grown up thinking that it was so cool to get to punch the pen in the ballot (although today I'll probably be using an ink pen). Now that it's actually my turn, I'm not as excited as I thought I would be, but I still feel like I'm taking a big step toward becoming an adult and being independent of my parents.

I do have to admit that I'll be very glad when this election is over. All the media hype and candidates bashing each other has gotten a little old and I'll be happy when I can watch Grey's and not have to watch 27 commercials for this candidate or that one. I've had a lot of mixed feelings about this election, mostly because I have people from both sides trying to tell me who to vote for. But ultimately, today I will make my own decision, and I think that's really cool that I'm able to do that in this country. Even though my one vote might not be that important in the overall election, it'll still be important to me because I'll know that I took that step to try and make a difference.

I know I'm guilty of trying to influence your vote for president this year (as well as your sibs), mostly because I was trying to make you guys understand how critical preserving a free market, capitalistic economy is and that any move toward socialism would be disastrous for your future. Ok, that was the aboslute last word on the matter. What I really want you to understand is how proud I am of you. The fact that you (and your sibs) have taken time to research the candidates and the issues speaks volumes of the outstanding character you possess. And your vote does matter - there was a recent vote for a levy in Nitro that lost by six votes. More than just a mark on a ballot, your vote means that you take being an American Citizen seriously. You are validating the efforts of all past Americans that fought and died to protect and provide that right - so please never take that lightly. In the final analysis, to the victor goes the spoils, and tomorrow the sun will come up and we will work with whomever wins - there's not a lot we can do about that, except vote...
